Why Use a Personal Healthcare Liaison?

Not all of us have a background in medicine, nutrition, law, realty, accounting, exercise, electric, or HVAC. That's why we hire people to assist in those areas. Why not do the same for our health?

We all have the right to good healthcare and expect to be given the best healthcare treatment possible; however, that hardly ever happens. We put our hope in that health providers have enough time to take care of us, they’ll charge us correctly, they’ll do the right tests, and send us to the best specialists. We put our hope in that our insurance will cover items that should be covered, that they’ll cover our meds for the cheapest amount, that they look out for our best interest. We hope that our healthcare team won’t give up until we are living our healthiest lives. Sadly, this isn’t happening.

The fact is, we don’t know what we don’t know. When we don’t know, we don’t know what to ask or what direction to go. Would a non-medical person know to ask, “Did you check my D-Dimer since I’m short of breath?”, “Did you order a head CT since I’m on a blood thinner and hit my head?”, “Did you order an echo since my troponin continues to elevate?”? I have a medical background to prompt me to ask these questions. I would have NO IDEA what to ask about an HVAC or plumbing problem. I don’t know what half of the words mean and I definitely don’t know what they do. YouTube and Google would only be able to get me so far. From there, I put my trust in the specialists, and I’m not satisfied until I know it’s fixed. With our health, we see someone for 15 minutes, leave and hope it helps. If it doesn’t, we have to make another appointment, wait weeks to a month to get back in, and get charged once again. I’m not saying all healthcare situations are like this, but it takes trial and error to find those diamond in the rough providers. Sometimes the provider is amazing, but the clinical staff is questionable, or vice versa. We should not settle for less than the best for our health.

This is where Personal Healthcare Liaisons can be of great value. Personal healthcare liaisons are nurses who have 5 or more years of nursing experience. They have the background to know what’s normal, what to ask, and what should have been ordered. They have the time to spend researching your particular situation. They have time to explain and help you understand. They have time to research top providers. LahSET has a list of premier providers who are added to the list based on client and personal healthcare liaison feedback. We also have providers that we would NOT recommend. We can figure it out for you. You can rest assured that someone is 100% focused on making sure you have the best clinical outcome. Things we contemplate for you: Are you seeing the correct specialists? Do you want to see the best specialist locally or the best specialist in the country? Do you feel confident in and like your current physicians? Did the providers order the right tests? Are you getting all of the benefits you’re eligible for? Are you paying the cheapest amount for your meds?

A few days ago, I went to pick up a new medication from a pharmacy and they said the total would be $40, after being run through my insurance (any medication over $20 is too expensive in my opinion). If this would have been me 10 years ago, I would have whipped out my debit card and paid it, no questions asked. But now, I know my options. I told them they’d have to wait, while I make sure I am paying the cheapest amount. I stepped aside, located a coupon within minutes and was able to decrease the total amount by more than half. Did my NP tell me this? No. Did my insurance company call to tell me this? No. Did the pharmacy offer a cheaper option? No. I only knew to do this because of my medical background. Do the NP, insurance company, and pharmacist know about these coupons? Yes, they do. Either they don’t care enough to tell you, or they don’t have the time to research it for each and every patient.
